umbau vienna studio book

In the summer of 2018, I was a part of a small cohort that travelled with umbau inc. to Vienna, Austria, with the aim of absorbing the design minds there. Over the course of five weeks, we visited over 3-dozen design firms, artists, sculptors, churches, museums, hat makers, shoe makers, violin makers, and much more.
I was tasked with leading the yearly initiative to document the journey. I took the approach of a journal—compiling photography from my peers and myself, as well as sketches, thoughts, epiphanies, breakthroughs, and questions.

The book is broken up into 5 loose booklets (each representing one week), and encased in a sleeve. By keeping the binding loose, each recipient of the book can both rearrange the events as they remember, or feel a sense of the disorientation and liberation we felt while immersed in Vienna. An uncomplicated design of black & white images with a punchy orange accent focuses the content and creates a memorable impact on readers.
Special thanks to Lena Abdali, Tate, Kaky, and all of umbau for helping this vision come to life.
